Volkswagen Updates Amarok Pickup Truck…Again

If it seems like only yesterday that Volkswagen introduced the 2013MY Amarok in Europe, it is because the latest version of the pickup truck was only just launched into the market in November.

At the time, the Amarok was presented with a base 2.0-liter TDI rated for 120hp (122PS) and a new 2.0 BiTDI delivering 178hp (180PS).

Beginning from this month, VW is dropping the 120hp entry level diesel unit, replacing it with a more potent diesel with the same displacement and common rail injection that generates an additional 18hp for a total output of 138hp (140PS) and peak torque of 340Nm (251 lb-ft), available over a range from 1,600 to 2,250 rpm.

The power-boost allows the base 138hp Amarok to complete the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint 0.6 seconds faster at 12.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 168km/h or 104mph (vs. 162km/h or 101mph). VW adds that the time it takes to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in 5th gear was improved by 0.5 seconds.

At the same time, fuel consumption remains unchanged over the 120hp TDI engine at 6.8lt/100km (41.6mpg UK or 34.6mpg US) when fitted with the optional BlueMotion Technology package.

The base engine is offered with the two-door Amarok SingleCab and the four-door DoubleCab, with either rear-wheel drive or selectable 4-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual gearbox.

VW also added a few more goodies to the options list such as the RNS 510 radio-navigation system, ParkPilot combined with a reversing camera, programmable auxiliary heating with remote control, fog lights with cornering lights (from Trendline) and the “Light and Sight” pack.

In Germany, the Amarok 2.0 TDI 120hp starts at €24,317 (equal to US$33,300 at today's exchange rates) for the Single Cab model.
