Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept Caught On The Streets Of London

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept is set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6th, but an English car spotter spied the concept yesterday morning in London near the Tower Bridge.

One thing is certain from these pictures, the topless Rover doesn't look any less strange in the real world than it does in the pictures we've seen ahead of the official unveil.
Commenting on the concept model, Land Rover Design Director, Gerry McGovern said: "The Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible. This study is not a traditional convertible design execution - instead we have worked with the balance of the Evoque's lines to retain its distinctive shape and create something that is unique and, we believe, highly desirable."

The study is based on the three-door Evoque and can seat four passengers. It features an electrically operated cloth top with the roof mechanism stowed neatly below the belt-line and also comes equipped with a Roll Over Protection System [ROPS].

BMW to Open Largest Showroom Worldwide in Abu Dhabi

BMW Group has opened the world’s largest showroom for BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and BMW motorcycles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Motors, the BMW Group’s long-standing importer for the region, has invested around AED 300 million (approx. 62 million euros) in the new 35,000-square-metre showroom over its three-year construction.
The facility features separate showrooms and sales areas for the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce cars, and for BMW motorcycles, with more than 70 automobiles and 10 motorcycles on permanent display. The dealership also has an extensive range of newer pre-owned vehicles as well as a service area that will be able to perform maintenance on up to 120 vehicles simultaneously. More than 450 staff members will work at the facility.

“The Middle East is an important region for the BMW Group. We sold more vehicles here in 2011 than ever before. There is tremendous future growth potential in many countries in this region and in the United Arab Emirates in particular.” said BMW Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, during the opening ceremony.

The BMW Group achieved a new sales record in the Middle East in 2011. A total of 18,657 BMW and MINI brand vehicles were sold last year in the region’s 14 import markets – an increase of more than nine per cent year-on-year. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) accounted for more than 47 per cent of deliveries, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai the largest markets.

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept Leaked

Dubbed Emerg-e, the concept car has so far only been teased with a handful of close-up detail shots tinted such a deep purple we were half expecting them to break out into a rendition of "Smoke on the Water" – which was, come to think of it, set just across the lake from where the concept is set to be unveiled just a few weeks from now. But we digress. The point is that a series of what appear to be patent renderings have leaked their way online to give us a much better idea of what to expect.
Though the car won’t make its public debut until next month at the Geneva Motor Show, leaked renderings have provided us an early look at the Infiniti Emerg-E concept. As seen here, the Infiniti Emerg-E wears a curved, futuristic two-door body that hides its advanced drivetrain.

The car itself is no surprise: we first heard rumors of a two-seat Infiniti electric car in September 2011. Infiniti has previously admitted that the two-seat Emerg-E concept will debut in Geneva next month with an extended-range electric drivetrain. That means that, like the Chevrolet Volt, the Infiniti will be an electric car that can use a small generator to recharge its batteries on the move.

The Emerg-E will drive almost exclusively on electrical power, and is expected to borrow the 80-kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery from the Nissan Leaf. The 1.2-liter range extender will be mid-mounted in the Emerg-E, which helps to improve the car’s balance, in keeping with the concept’s sporting intentions.

If the Infiniti Emerg-E concept evolves into a production car, don’t expect it to launch for another year or so. Parent company Nissan’s next electric offering will be an all-electric small van, which should arrive some time in 2013. A production version of the Infiniti electric car wouldn’t likely emerge before 2013 — or maybe not until 2014.

BMW will pay a $3 million penalty for failing to recall vehicles in a timely fashion

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the German automaker will pay the civil penalties in response to the agency's assertion that the automaker delayed reports of safety defects to the agency.

NHTSA began an investigation of BMW's practices in 2010, looking at 16 recalls that covered more than 300,000 of the company's cars and motorcycles going back in some cases to 2002.

NHTSA began an investigation of BMW's practices in 2010, looking at 16 recalls that covered more than 300,000 of the company's cars and motorcycles going back in some cases to 2002.

NHTSA's investigation led the agency to believe that BMW had not fulfilled its obligation to report a known safety defect within five days, as is required under the law. The fines will be paid into the Treasury Department's General Fund.

To address the issue, BMW is changing its methods for how it provides information to the government and how it deals with recalls.

New Study Shows that New U.S. Market Vehicle's Fuel Economy Improved by 14 Percent from 2008-2012MY

A new study by the University of Michigan Transport Research Institute shows that car manufacturers have managed to improve their new cars’ fuel economy by 3 mpg in the last four years.

According to the study, the average fuel economy of all 2012MY light vehicles available on the U.S. market is 21.5 mpg US (10.9lt/100km). That's a far cry from the 54.5 mpg US (4.3lt/100km) target set for 2025, but still an impressive 14 percent up or +3.0mpg from 2008MY’s average of 18.9 mpg US (12.5lt/100km).

New 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible kicks out 650HP, limits top speed

Twenty years ago, Ford debuted the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra at the Chicago Auto Show and introduced the world to its high-performance skunkworks department, known as SVT or Special Vehicle Team.

Today, Ford celebrates SVT's platinum anniversary the only way it knows how: with another Mustang variant. And as suspected, it comes in the form of a topless Shelby GT500.

The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra (which, along with the F-150 Lighting, launched Ford’s performance division) delivered 235 HP from its 5.0-liter V8. Today’s Shelby GT500 is a whopping 415 HP more powerful, proving that the horsepower game has moved on significantly these days. The result is an output of 650 ponies and 600 lb-ft of torque.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is”, said SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer Kerry Baldori. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but still be driven on a daily basis.”

In addition to the carbon fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, transmission and axle, SVT fitted its own specially developed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, along with six-piston Brembo calipers squeezing massive discs up front.

Like the coupe, the Bilstein setup is part of the Performance Package (why it's not included as standard is beyond us) and Ford will also offer a Track Pack that includes an external oil cooler, differential cooler and transmission cooler to keep temps in check when flogging the drop top around the tarmac.

And before you ask: No, the GT500 coupe's 200 mph top speed doesn't carry over to the Convertible. In a rare moment of sanity, Ford's engineers saw fit to limit the GT500 'vert to 155 mph – like the rest of the roofless Mustangs. Hit the jump for the full details.

Buyers can also opt for the upgraded Track Package that adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.
